Getting rid of New York City squirrels using one way funnel
Squirrels find their way into homes accidentally or in search of food and shelter. It is important to get rid of them. They have sharp teeth and claws. They can tear through building material creating a lot of destruction and mess. They are noisy and their presence can be known immediately. Repellents and deterrents are always not very successful.
The best way of getting rid of them is by using a one way funnel. This is non lethal and it is legal. This method also ensures that it traps only the squirrel in your home and not any other animal.
One way funnel
The one way funnel is made of hardware wire rolled into a funnel shape. The wide opening is attached to the building over the original hole. When, the squirrel exits a door in the funnel drops into place preventing it from re entering. The other end is narrow, but large enough for the squirrel to squeeze through. The important aspect is that the squirrel cannot re enter.
A one way exclusion door is also used to remove New York squirrels. This looks like a trap open at both ends. One end has wings and it is mounted directly over the exit hole. The door has a torsion spring. This lifts and allows the squirrel through. It cannot lift back in the opposite direction.
1.	Inspection:
Check the building thoroughly and note all entry holes. Squirrels are ingenious and may enter through many ways. There may be many small holes but, usually there is one large main entry hole.
2.	Sealing:
Seal all the holes leaving the main entry hole. Sealing has to be done with steel. The New York City squirrel can easily chew through wood and other materials. Check to see that there is no entry hole left unsealed.
3.	Place the funnel:
The funnel is then placed at the main entry point which is not sealed. It is fixed using screws and insulation. This must be done early in the morning before the squirrel gets out.
4.	Final sealing:
Keep observing and ensure that all the squirrels have left. Then remove the funnel and seal the main entry/exit point.
5.	Cleaning and disinfection
The areas occupied and used by the New York City squirrel will contain droppings and food. Remove, clean and disinfect. Odor elimination also must be done. Cleaning is important for health reasons. The urine and droppings may attract other squirrels or rodents.
It is important to find out if there are baby New York squirrels nesting inside your house. If so it is better to wait till they are weaned. The babies will not survive if their mother is caught. Help from wildlife experts can also be sought if there is any problem.
One way funnel and exclusion doors are available in the market or can be made. When buying a readymade one it is essential to follow the instructions given. Proper installation is important for best results.
